Message from the Pastor

Welcome to Poland United Methodist Church! Whatever brought you to our web site, I hope that you will take the time to become familiar with this great church that has a tremendous history of worship, study, and service. PUMC is a vibrant church that is filled with the Spirit of God and energetic people, willing to take on any task to serve Christ and to minister to those in need.

Poland UMC is made up of people from virtually every type of religious background, including those with no previous religious background. Our focus is not on doctrine, but on nurturing all people who are seeking to be disciples of Jesus Christ. I invite you to come and experience the warmth and fellowship of Poland United Methodist Church and to join with us in your journey of faith.

Short History of PUMC

Poland Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1830.  Prior to the erection of a church building in 1834, meetings were held in a school house which stood were the Presbyterian Church now stands and in a log school house at Cook's Corners.  Church services for many years were in the hands of circuit riders.  Records are not clear when the period ended but we believe in 1850.

Poland Methodist First Church History of PUMCThe first church was a one story building without a basement erected where the Bank One now stands.  In 1867 the building was remodeled by raising the church and placing a story underneath.  On July 19, 1904 the cornerstone was laid for a brick church at the same location.  This cornerstone now rests at the southwest corner of our present building.  On April 1, 1957 tragedy struck.  Fire destroyed the sanctuary.  Plans were made to relocate and build at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road on land donated by members.  In 1962 the completed church was consecrated and dedication services for the debt free building were held on May 20, 1973.  The present building is of Colonial design, topped by a cross bearing steeple 134 feet above ground level.  The bell, which calls us to worship each Sunday, first hung in the belfry of the old wooden church. The bell alone weighs 800 pounds and the bearings, trunnions, wheel and yoke another 400 pounds. The stained glass window in the chapel, symbolic of the communion elements, was in the choir of the brick church. The chapel was named Grace Chapel in memory of Grace Marston, deceased wife of Reverend M. Dean Marston, minister at the time of the building of the new church.

Poland United Methodist Church is part of the covenant global community of United Methodist Churches.  More information about the United Methodist Church can be obtained by accessing the web site linked below.

As one of the seventy United Methodist congregations of the Mahoning Valley District, PUMC is part of the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church.  More information about the East Ohio Conference can be obtained by accessing the web site linked below.

Poland Methodists have always been concerned about people, always responding to needs of others in the community, the country and around the world. As a congregation we are sensitive to community needs and, wherever possible, we reach out in prayer and in deed to meet those needs. An active Sunday School ministers to the Christian education of our church family. Youth programs and activities provide opportunities to participate in wholesome social, educational and religious activities.  In addition to sustaining the Benevolence Program, our congregation has long supported the United Methodist Community Center, the Rescue Mission and the Protestant Family Services in Youngstown with gifts of money, material goods and service. Since the early 60’s our church has served as the site for the Red Cross blood mobile unit, providing the facilities and many workers for promoting the community wide blood drive.

Thanks to our spacious building we often serve as a meeting spot for a wide variety of organizations. District wide church meetings of various types are often held at our church. Our facilities also host the meetings of community Senior Citizens groups and the local AARP. Campfire Girls, Girl Scout, Boy Scouts, Brownies and Cubs have long used the church for their meetings and activities. In serving the community we provide space for the Poland Interfaith Food Pantry, and meeting places for weight watching groups, Al-A-Non, OA, aerobic classes, home extension groups, Habitat for Humanity and the Board of Elections. Poland Methodists are active members who seek to serve, not only our community but also are world as good ambassadors of Jesus Christ.

Throughout the years, Poland United Methodists have been supportive of various mission projects, both here at home and throughout the world. While the projects have changed over the years, we have always supported at least one missionary every year. For many years, our mission support mainly took the form of giving financially, for the last several years we have emphasized the giving of ourselves in addition to our resources. Several very successful mission work trips have been taken by the men, women and youth of our congregation. That coupled with increased work at the Rescue Mission, the Christmas projects that help 125+ through the United Methodist Community Center and the monthly preparing and serving meals for the Salvation Army, keep us active and personally involved in reaching out to others in the love of Jesus Christ.

PASTORIAL STAFF

Michael D. Grant is the Senior Minister at Poland United Methodist Church. Mike graduated from Perry  High School, Otterbein College and Asbury Seminary in Wilmore, KY. Having most recently served as  Pastor of the Damascus United Methodist Church, Mike was appointed to Poland United Methodist Church in July 2007 where he serves with his wife Holly.  E-Mail address: pastormike@polandumc.org.

Pamm Shipsky is an Assistant to the Pastor in the area of Youth ministry and Christian Education.  Pamm was born and raised in Poland.  Her parents Robert and Judy (Weaver) Shipsky encouraged her to travel, so when she was 11 years old she went to the Philippians with CISV (Children's International Summer Village), which organizes month long summer camps around the world.  About this time her family started regularly attending Poland United Methodist Church.  They became very involved and during Pamm's sophomore year her family all committed their lives to Christ.  She felt called by the Lord to be involved in missions and so she went with Teen Mania on a two month mission trip to the Philippians in the summer of 2000 and in the summer of 2001 she went to Panama for two months with the same organization.  When Pamm graduated from high school she decided to major in Missions at Nyack College in New York.  While at school she planned a trip to Zambia for three months in order to get a more realistic missions experience.  Pamm graduated in December 2005 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Bible and Theology and she felt God leading her in a different direction that she originally though.  She is now working back at PUMC as the Youth Pastor and is intending to go to Asbury Seminary to study Theology.  She hopes to eventually earn a doctorate and teach at the College level.
